Into the darkness of winter we’re thrown,
its merciless, greedy claws snatching away
everything we’ve known
of summer.
Eventually
our racking sobs of grief subside
and we understand innately
while Earth will continue to orbit the sun
the sun never shines on iniquity.
We must prepare for untold months ahead
wrapping tightly in warm hide and thick velvet,
filling canteens with whiskey and water
and hearts and minds with the wisdom of nature,
words whispered by ancestors
impatient for us to embrace
to celebrate
the truths of humanity
of love
of beauty
in all forms.
